Are Google Fonts killing creativity?

In the world of digital design, accessibility and convenience often take centre stage. This topic recently came to light after speaking to a potential new client who insisted that we needed to use a google font in his logo.

Back from my days in advertising, it was hammered to us to create a unique story; one that only you can own. If two washing powders do a similar thing you need that point of difference in a brand in order to create a) distinction b) to give you the competitive advantage.

If you talk to your competitors in a more compelling way than the nearest rival, chances are you’ll have better success. Also if you don’t look like your competitors, isn’t that a brave thing?

In some respect Google could be making our job much easier but in reality is the right decision? Would Coke-Cola be the brand it is today if it had picked a google font? I think we know the answer to that.

Safe is easy, creative is much harder to pull off.

Google Fonts offers a plethora of typefaces, readily available for designers of all levels. Its integration with popular design tools and platforms makes it incredibly easy to implement. For startups and small businesses with tight budgets, free access to a wide variety of fonts is a godsend. However, this very convenience comes with a significant downside. As more designers gravitate towards Google Fonts, a homogenisation of design begins to take shape.
