Liverpool more than a Club?

A home, a place a feeling, spirit. Liverpool.
Alex Frech
This weekend, the city lit up as LFC claimed their 20th league title—and their first in five years. The celebrations weren’t just about football; they were about identity. About belief. About something far deeper.
Because the question is: Is Liverpool FC just a football club or something more?

Back in 2020, we met with Peter Moore—then Managing Director of LFC to present a new narrative we created for the city. A vision rooted in story, community, and pride.

It was a bright autumn afternoon when John and I walked into the club’s city centre offices. We were met by a sharply dressed man with a big beaming smile.

Peter had a unique blend of Americana and Scouse in his voice, and as he started to speak, he didn’t stop with business. He told stories—his own, the club’s, the city’s. He spoke of architecture, people, passion. We listened. Just listened. And something clicked.

We left the meeting without pitching a thing, yet we left with a sense of alignment, an understanding that LFC wasn’t just a club. It was Liverpool. And Liverpool, in its essence to the who cared, always means more.

Now, four or five years on, we reflect on what the city and the club have achieved. Are they symbiotic? Or do they thrive separately?

Well, 1980’s Liverpool was a very different place than it its today. Some nostalgics may say better but in the main, the city, like the club has matured magnificently. Most recently hosting the Eurovision, preceded by many other huge events, and many that we have helped deliver – including Royal Delux’s Giants (when 40ft marionettes that took over the city).

Of course there was Eurovision which ignited a fire for music across the globe and transformed the city into a global stage and we cannot forget BBC’s Radio One’s Big Weekend, which arrives this summer to Sefton Park.

Eurovision. Liverpool

Today, Liverpool is a hub of passion and leads with its heart. Grounded in its roots led by its history in football and music now stretches across many, vibrant indie scenes. From the Good Market that we support, to artisan food, coffee roasters, bakeries, breweries, and even ourselves. Bound by defiance and boundless energy in the pursuit of connection and togetherness.

We watched the winning game of the season in the pub, with a mix of  students, locals and fans from across the UK and beyond. The emphatic roars that could be heard from the streets, the horns beeping as cars passed by, then another goal and finally. Then the team, embraced, aligned and looked at the crowd and we all sung together.

Maybe, by singing one harmonious song (regardless of who you support) the city will never have to walk alone, again.
